What is microtopping?
Microtopping is a decorative overlay applied in layers over a prepared substrate. It creates a new wearing surface rather than exposing and polishing the original concrete. Trowel application gives the finish movement and patination, with colour and texture agreed for the project.
The complete system includes preparation, any required primer, topping layers and protective treatment. Thickness and compatibility depend on the specified product and base.
Choose a finish for your commercial space
For retail, office and customer-facing interiors, discuss appearance alongside foot traffic, furniture, cleaning and likely spills. Review a sample to agree the level of variation and finish before installation.
Walls, stairs, wet areas, exterior locations or heated substrates require their own suitability assessment. Do not assume that a floor finish is approved for every surface or exposure. Supply any required performance criteria so they can be checked against current product information.
Can the existing floor be retained?
The substrate must be assessed for stability, moisture, coatings, contamination and damage. Existing tiles or other finishes may require removal or additional preparation. A thin topping does not correct structural movement or replace necessary repairs.

Installation and handover
Once the system and base preparation are agreed, the programme accounts for preparation, application, finishing and curing. Protecting the floor from subsequent trades is part of handover planning. Confirm when foot traffic, furniture and cleaning can resume for the installed system.

How much does commercial microtopping cost?
Area, preparation, repairs, detailing, finish and access affect cost. Provide drawings or photographs and the current floor condition so the scope can be assessed.
Is microtopping waterproof?
Water resistance depends on the complete system and its details. Do not treat a decorative topping as a waterproofing system without the appropriate specification and supporting evidence.
Will the finish be completely uniform?
A hand-applied finish has variation. Samples help agree the intended character, while substrate condition and detailing can influence the final result.
How do I clean it?
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the installed topping and protective finish. Use compatible products, remove spills promptly and protect the surface during furniture moves. Any periodic treatment should follow that system’s guidance.
