Choosing a heavy-duty polyurethane resin screed
A polyurethane screed provides a resin floor wearing surface over a prepared substrate. The complete system, including thickness and texture, must be selected for the actual operating conditions. Food factories, breweries and beverage production areas can have very different requirements from dry manufacturing spaces.
Tell us about heat, washdowns, spills and traffic before a specification is agreed. Any required chemical resistance, temperature performance or product approval needs to be supported by the selected manufacturer’s current documentation.
Textured or smooth matt finish?
Textured finishes for wet processing
Surface texture should be chosen around likely contaminants, footwear and cleaning methods. Drainage, falls and floor-to-wall details also need to be considered. A textured floor requires an appropriate cleaning routine; its performance depends on its condition and use.
Smooth matt finishes for dry work areas
A smooth matt finish may suit dry industrial areas where the specification allows it. Discuss wheeled traffic, loading and spill risks when choosing the finish. Heavy-duty polyurethane screeds and resilient smooth polyurethane flooring are different system options and should be compared using their individual specifications.
What we need to assess
- Production conditions: process temperatures, hot water, steam cleaning and sudden temperature changes.
- Chemical exposure: substance names, concentrations, temperatures and likely contact times, including cleaning chemicals.
- Traffic: people, trolleys, vehicles, machinery and concentrated loads.
- Base condition: existing coatings, cracks, contamination, moisture and damaged areas.
- Details: coving, drainage channels, thresholds, falls and movement joints.
- Programme: access, production shutdowns and the time available before cleaning or full use resumes.
Preparation and installation
The base needs assessment before preparation and application are agreed. Existing coatings and unsuitable material may need removal, with repairs and priming specified for the proposed system. Find out more about our floor preparation services.
The installation programme covers preparation, application, detailing and curing. Necessary movement joints must be accommodated. Confirm the return-to-service times for foot traffic, full loading and washdown rather than treating the end of application as the end of curing.

What thickness do I need?
Thickness depends on the selected system, substrate and operating conditions. Hot washdown or heavy loading requirements must be considered before choosing a build-up; a generic thickness range is not a substitute for a project specification.
Can polyurethane screed be steam cleaned?
Some systems can be specified for steam cleaning, but suitability depends on product, thickness, detailing and the cleaning method. Provide the required temperatures so these can be checked before installation.
Is it suitable for food production?
The proposed floor must be assessed against the site’s cleaning, exposure and hygiene requirements. Share any required product evidence with your enquiry. A floor forms part of the wider hygiene arrangements and does not replace the site’s procedures. See our hygienic flooring guidance.
