Sustainable Flooring

Environmental considerations for commercial flooring

Choosing a floor involves more than its appearance on installation day. Ecoflor can discuss refurbishment, material choices, maintenance and the intended service conditions as part of your commercial or industrial project.

Share your flooring and environmental requirements, including any project assessment criteria and evidence your specification needs.

Assess the existing floor first

Where the base or existing finish can be retained, refurbishment may reduce the amount of material that needs removal. Suitability depends on condition, adhesion, compatibility and the performance required.

Options to discuss include polishing suitable existing concrete and NEWLIFE Overvinyl refurbishment. Neither approach is suitable for every substrate; assessment comes before selection.

Ask for product-specific evidence

Identify the information required for the proposed materials, such as an Environmental Product Declaration where available, emissions test information or verified recycled content. Check that the evidence relates to the exact product and intended use.

Terms such as water-based, solvent-free or recycled do not by themselves describe the environmental impact of the complete installation. Consider preparation, primers, repairs, finish, transport, maintenance and eventual replacement as part of the project assessment.

Specify for use and maintenance

A system that suits the traffic, cleaning and exposure can be maintained around its intended use. Discuss inspection, local repair and recoating options when selecting the floor.

Expected service life depends on the product, installation, conditions and care. Avoid assuming one lifespan across all resin or concrete finishes.

Compare suitable options

Review epoxy flooring, polyurethane flooring and concrete finishes against the functional brief. Environmental information should be considered alongside traffic, hygiene, grip, appearance and programme requirements.

For decorative interiors, discuss available material information and maintenance needs with your samples. Product availability and supporting evidence vary between systems.

Plan installation and waste requirements

Include removal, waste handling, packaging and site access requirements in the project brief. The agreed scope should describe the work required and any documentation the project team needs.
