What is hygienic flooring?
Hygienic flooring is a floor system specified to support the cleaning and operational requirements of an area. Resin finishes can provide a continuous, easy-to-clean surface, with details such as coving and drainage interfaces considered as part of the installation. Movement joints and other necessary construction details must still be accommodated.
The floor is one part of a site’s hygiene arrangements. Cleaning procedures, maintenance and the condition of joints and drainage details remain essential; a resin floor alone does not make an area sterile or guarantee compliance.
Choosing a system for your environment
Food and drink production
For food processing, preparation and washdown areas, the specification needs to account for water, fats, cleaning chemicals, temperatures and wheeled traffic. Explore our flooring for food and drink manufacturers and polyurethane screed systems.
Commercial spaces with hygiene requirements
Retail, commercial and industrial areas can require different combinations of appearance, texture and cleanability. The right finish depends on the actual exposure and cleaning routine, rather than the room name alone. Compare our resin flooring options with your project requirements.
Healthcare, laboratories and pharmaceutical premises
For specialist environments, provide the project specification and any required product approvals or test evidence at the enquiry stage. Suitability for cleaning agents, hygiene procedures and operational conditions must be checked against the proposed system’s current manufacturer documentation.
Details to agree before installation
- Slip resistance and cleaning: specify the surface texture around expected contaminants, footwear and cleaning methods. A more textured finish also needs an appropriate cleaning routine.
- Temperature exposure: tell us about hot water, steam cleaning and temperature changes. These requirements must be checked for the particular system and installed thickness.
- Chemical exposure: identify cleaning products, concentrations, contact times and likely process spills so compatibility can be assessed.
- Coving and drainage: plan floor-to-wall junctions, channels, drain interfaces and falls with the wider project team.
- Existing substrate: the condition of the base, moisture, contamination, cracks and existing coatings affect preparation and system selection.
- Traffic and downtime: include pedestrian routes, trolleys, machinery and the time available before the area returns to service.
Preparation, installation and return to service
We assess the existing floor and the proposed use before agreeing the preparation and flooring system. The installation programme needs to allow for preparation, repairs, application and curing, with access and adjacent operations considered in advance.
Installation time and return-to-service time are different. Foot traffic, full loading, washdown and chemical exposure may have different waiting periods. Confirm the programme for the selected system and site conditions before scheduling production or other trades.
Cleaning and maintenance
Follow the selected manufacturer’s cleaning guidance and your site’s hygiene procedures. Use compatible cleaning products and equipment, remove spills promptly and inspect damage, joints and drainage interfaces. Arrange repairs when needed to maintain the condition of the floor.
Hygienic flooring questions
Can hygienic resin flooring be steam cleaned?
Only where the specified system, thickness and installation details are suitable for the required cleaning temperature and method. Tell us about steam cleaning before a system is selected.
Is every hygienic floor antimicrobial?
No. Any antimicrobial claim must be supported by evidence for the particular product. It does not replace cleaning, disinfection or the site’s hygiene procedures.
What affects the cost?
Floor area, substrate condition, preparation, repairs, system thickness, surface finish, coving, drainage details and site access all affect the quotation. Share drawings or photographs and your operational requirements so the scope can be assessed.
