Choosing a floor for a commercial interior means balancing appearance with the existing base, traffic, cleaning and installation programme. Polished concrete, tiles, vinyl and timber offer different design possibilities; none is automatically the most stylish or practical choice for every space.
Ecoflor works on commercial and industrial projects only. Discuss your flooring project with your location, floor area, preferred appearance and completion dates.
Start with the design brief
Describe the atmosphere you want to create and how the floor should relate to lighting, walls, fittings and furniture. Include brand colours, circulation routes and transitions between areas. Collect reference images, but ask what can be achieved on your actual floor before treating them as a specification.
Assess the appearance of the existing concrete
For a polished concrete finish, discuss aggregate exposure, sheen and the condition of the slab. Repairs, joints, cracks and differences in the concrete can affect the appearance. Ask whether a sample or trial area is appropriate and agree which features will remain visible.
Clarify whether the proposal involves polishing the existing concrete or applying a separate decorative finish. These are different design and specification choices.
Compare other finishes fairly
- Tiles: assess the proposed format, pattern, joints, grout colour and transition details.
- Vinyl: compare product samples, layout, joints and the requirements of the existing base.
- Timber: discuss colour, grain, finish and the maintenance needed in the intended commercial setting.
- Resin finishes: review the proposed colour, texture and system alongside the operating requirements.
Compare named products and agreed samples rather than treating “traditional flooring” as one material with a single appearance or performance level.
Review samples under the planned lighting
Check how the proposed floor looks in daylight and under the planned artificial lighting. Consider sheen, reflections, colour and the relationship to surrounding surfaces. A sample viewed in different lighting may not represent the final space.
If lighting performance or glare is a project requirement, ask the design team to assess it. A reflective finish alone does not establish an energy saving or suitability for every activity.
Include operation and aftercare in the decision
Record expected traffic, equipment, likely spills and cleaning arrangements. Ask how the specified finish will be maintained and how local damage would be assessed. Visual preference should be considered alongside the floor’s suitability for these conditions.
Discuss slip performance using the actual operating brief. Neither a glossy appearance nor a textured description alone confirms that a surface meets your requirements.
Agree the quotation and acceptance criteria
Ask the proposal to identify preparation, repairs, finish, edges, joints, samples and handover information. Confirm access arrangements, protection of adjoining work and the installation programme. Record any limitations in the existing slab and how the finished appearance will be reviewed.
